Wednesday September 23
Optional visit to The Stahl House
We think we have a very special optional activity for those of you who arrive in Los Angeles by early afternoon on Wednesday—a private tour of Case Study House # 22, also known as the Stahl House. This is one of the truly iconic houses of the mid-century west coast architectural aesthetic.

Thursday September 24
Downtown Los Angeles
Part modern transportation hub, part film noir set, Union Station is newly restored and ready for its close up. Benjamin Briggs leads us on a tour of this classic station that combines Mission Revival with Streamline Moderne—a perfect introduction to LA 20th century architecture.
We next take a tour of Frank Gehry’s masterpiece whose beauty, engineering—and acoustics—retain their power to astonish eleven years after the building’s completion.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles
It's off to LAMOCA where we add art to the mix. Designed by Arata Isozaki, LAMOCA houses what many consider to be the finest contemporary art collection in the Western US—and that’s saying something in art-obsessed LA.
The behind the scene buzz on this Diller Scofidio + Renfro building has it that we will be among the first patrons to tour this fabulous new cultural offering developed and financed by Eli Broad. The Broad is now scheduled to open shortly before our visit!

Friday September 25
Pasadena
We begin our day with a tour of this residence designed by Greene and Greene for David Gamble of Proctor and Gamble. Gamble House is considered to be ‘America’s Arts and Crafts masterpiece’.
The Huntington Library and Gardens
Next up is a tour of this extraordinary cultural marvel with its unparalleled library, art collection and gardens. One of the Guttenberg Bibles, Gainsborough’s Blue Boy, Warhol’s Campbell Soup Can (Beef Noodle), the Japanese Garden, the Rose Garden, the Desert Garden—a list that only begins to suggest the number and breadth of the treasures to be found at The Huntington.
The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens
We selectively sample this vast and wonderful 127 acre preserve that includes plants from around the world, many collected in the late 19th century during the golden age of international botanical discovery.

Saturday September 26
Los Angeles ‘Proper’
Walking tours are so East Coast! Benjamin Briggs takes us on a specially-curated architectural tour of Los Angeles with an emphasis on ‘what makes LA, LA’ all in the comfort of our own motor coach.
A magnificent Frank Lloyd Wright home from the early 1920’s in the ‘Mayan Revival’ style and, lucky us, Hollyhock will be fresh from it’s current extensive remodeling and ready for our tour.
Our final tour of the trip allows us to continue our focus on art, architecture and gardens since The Getty Center, indeed, has it all including a show stopper of a building complex designed by Richard Maier, a central garden designed by artist Robert Irwin and an artcollection that runs the gamut from Ruebens to di Suvero.
